Jessica voluntarily left her family home in Union, Missouri on December 26, 1995, and went to a friend's home. She told her mother she would call and check in at 5:00 p.m. to tell her whether she would be home for dinner. That call never came.
Jimmy Hopkins picked up Jessica from her friend's home, where she initially told her mother she'd be. Hopkins was 23 years old in 1995 and was the son of a friend of Jessica's mother.
Hopkins paid Mark Henderson to give he and Jessica a ride. Henderson told police Hopkins mentioned that Jessica was pregnant with his child, and they were going to Niagara Falls, NY to get married. Hopkins even showed some rings to Henderson to cement his story, all the while Jessica sat quietly in the back seat of Henderson's 1994 two-door, aqua colored, Chevrolet Cavalier, similar to the one pictured here to the left.
When this was told to Jessica's mother, she denied that Jesscia was dating Jimmy, and she had medical reason to know that Jessica was not pregnant at the time of her disappearance. Jessica's best friend reported that Jessica never mentioned a boyfriend to her either.
During the early evening hours, Hopkins, Henderson, and Jessica all checked into the Dollar Inn in the 1000 block of North Main Street in Cloverdale, IN. Hopkins and Jessica stayed in room 222, while Henderson stayed in room 224. Henderson told authorities he heard noises coming from Jessica and Hopkins' room during the night that resembled a body being thrown against a wall. However, Hopkins told him that he and Jessica were having sex at the time.
By the following morning, Hopkins took Jessica and stole Henderson's Cavalier. Henderson was left stranded at the hotel and had to call and report his vehicle stolen.
Authorities learned that 300 miles from Cloverdale, IN in Paris, Tennessee, Hopkins pawned his grandmother's wedding ring later that day on December 27.
Less than two weeks later, Henderson's cavalier was found abandoned in Compton, California.
Investigators found that witnesses saw a girl matching Jessica's description with Hopkins and discovered that Hopkins worked at an ice-cream shop in the Compton area for a while. It is believed that Jessica did in fact arrive with Hopkins in California. She has not been heard from since.
In the late spring or early summer of 1996, Hopkins returned to Missouri alone. It wasn't until November of that same year that investigators were finally able to question him about the whereabouts of Jessica. He told authorities that Jessica was unharmed when he left her and the last he had even seen of her, she was with a Mexican man known only as Capone at a hotel in Hollywood, California. However, the address Hopkins gave for the hotel was nothing but a vacant lot.
In later years, Hopkins supposedly told several people that he killed Jessica and disposed of her body.
In April of 2008, Hopkins killed his wife and then turned the gun on himself in the home he shared with his wife, Anna. He was never charged with any crime related to Jessica's disappearance; however, Jessica's mother and authorities believe that Hopkins murdered her.
Although her tastes may have changed since then, Jessica enjoyed Mexican and Chinese food, milk, tea, Pepsi, and Kool-Aid.
Her favorite movie was Dirty Dancing and the 1991 television film, Sarah, Plain and Tall. Her favorite T.V. shows were Saved by the Bell, Full House, and America's Funniest Home Videos.
She enjoyed spending time with her dog, Max. Her favorite color was hunter-green, and she enjoyed collecting porcelain dolls.
In the summertime, camping and swimming were her some of her favorite hobbies.
In 1995, Jessica was in the seventh grade at Union Middle School. Her family describes her as being reserved around unfamiliar people and outgoing around family and friends.
In 1998, Jessica's parents moved to Independence, MO.
In 2006, they, along with the rest of her family held a memorial service for Jessica. Her parents still live in Independence, MO as of today.
